This is the Future Hikes Blog where fellow hikers have posted logs about
their trips
08/16/2008- Elk Neck State Forest, MD Camp and Hike OK, it is 2 weeks until this scheduled hike. Here is a link to the park's web
site:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/elkneck.html
It looks fairly level, there's a light house nearby that we can see. There's
even a beach. There are some day hikes available, but they make you buy a
trail guide to get information about them :( This is basically a 'do your own
thing' weekend. If you want to hike, you can hike. If you want to swim, you
can swim. If you want to just sit around camp and relax, that's OK too.
Elk Neck State Forest is just north of the park. The Mason-Dixon Trail goes
through there. We could hike in and stay there as an alternative. Not sure
if camping is allowed there or not.
The state of Maryland is funny about the fact that you have to camp on their
camping pads in their campgrounds. The rangers do enforce this policy. I
guess if you use a hammock, you're OK. Anyway, I think that this would be a
neat area to explore. I may ride my motorcycle there to save gas.
So far we have 1 maybe for this hike:
Paul K
If anyone else wants to come along on this camp and hike, please let me know.
I'll hold off on making a reservation to see who else signs up as well as what
the weather will be. Sign up now!
Mike C The Wildcat Mountain Natural Area, VA Day Hike will take place on Saturday,
May 17th, 2008. Only 5.2 miles but elevation changes are about 1500 feet,
this area is owned by the Nature Conservancy and is located near Marshall, VA.
Meeting time is 9AM. Here is a link to a very nice outdoor site that
describes this area as well as directions to it:

This land is in 'horse country' and was donated by the Arundel family to the
Nature Conservancy in the 1960's. I've never been here so I'm looking forward
to exploring some new trails. I checked with the Nature Conservancy and we do
not need permission to hike here. It is open to the public between dawn and
dusk.
I understand that the price of gas may effect turnout on hikes from here on
out so I understand if those far away don't want to do this one. So if you
are interested in hiking this day hike with me, please let me know.
Mike C The Mason-Dixon Trail System is sponsoring a 9 mile day hike of the MDT

Set your calendar. August 17 Friday & 18th Saturday, reservations have been made for camping sites at the Jennings Randolph Lake / Robert W Craig Campground WV. A family affair......This is a very nice area.
I'll also send a couple of attachments regarding a new trail on the Maryland side of the Jennings Randolph Lake, that you might want to take a glance at, directly to any known email address.
More planning news to follow, folks. If you think you might be at all interested in participating in this hike, please respond to this posting. I may be doing some trail work with the Mason-Dixon Trail along the Susquehanna River in PA this weekend. We will be working in the area known as Apollo Park, which is near Airville, PA. The trail work will be from 9AM to 2 PM. The MDTS has their club meeting between 2-4PM. I may go car camping in either Codorus or Pinchot State Park Saturday night, June 16.
