Note: This is a maildrop checklist that I have compiled over the years. It
pays to have a list to avoid forgetting something important. Print out and
place this list in each maildrop box for inventorying the contents as well
as additional kindling. I've found that about 4.5-5 days worth of food will
fit in a 12x12x15 box. This is about the most that you can fit in most
backpacks. Be sure to pack everything in freezer bags versus storage bags.
The reasons are that they are stronger and will keep things from leaking as
well as help keep possible bugs or mice out of your mail drop while it is
waiting for you.
Address all maildrops as follows: Your return address should be on the box. The box should be addressed to Your Name, your Trail Name, General Delivery, City, State, Zip. You can get a list of post offices along the AT at the ATC website. Also, write on the box: Hold for AT Thru (or Section) Hiker (Your name and/or trail name). ETA mm/dd-dd/yyyy. It's also a good idea to place your return address either on your maildrop checklist or on a separate index card placed within the maildrop. If your shipping label comes off of the box, you stand a better chance of having the box returned to you. Use strong packing tape as well as alot of it on your maildrop. This keeps the box from breaking open as well as detering ants, mice or other "critters" from getting into the box while it is waiting for you at the post office. Most post offices will keep mail drops for anywhere from 30 days to until the end of the thru hiker season.
